Pray For Libya - An Unexpected Flash Flood Sweeps Libya/h5> One of the deadliest floods in North African history has wiped out a quarter of the city of Derna in Libya.
Why was the storm so deadly? Storm Daniel formed in Greece on September 4. This storm caused strong winds, heavy rain, flooding, and deaths there as well as in Turkey and Bulgaria before crossing the Mediterranean.
The storm hit Libya a few days later, causing floods on Sunday in cities along its eastern coast, including Benghazi, Bayda, and Derna.
The dam collapsed outside Derna. Derna was the hardest hit after two dams broke upstream of the city, releasing around 30 million cubic meters (39 million cubic meters) of water that ravaged the city with a population of about 100,000.
It is estimated that the death toll reached 18,000 - 20,000 and 10,000 people are missing. The floodwaters were so strong that victims and buildings were swept out to sea. Hasbunallah wani’mal wakiil
