🐾 Hachi’s Law
I’m Leisha D’Angelo. I’ve been involved in animal advocacy for years, and I’m working to change a system most people don’t even realize exists.
In Texas, a local government can order your dog to be euthanized over minor incidents.
Most people assume there are safeguards. That facts are verified. That the punishment matches what actually happened.
That’s not always the case.
In Hachi’s case, he was ordered euthanized for a first-time minor injury that didn’t require anything more than a bandage.
He’s alive today because I advocated for him and helped bring attention and support from around the world. The family, after feeling defeated, found the strength to fight back and won in appeals court.
The judge agreed. It was a minor injury.
We’ve seen this more than once.
Jack was another case. Same pattern. Initial claims of a severe injury led to a euthanasia order. I advocated for him, and the higher court agreed it was a minor injury. The order was reversed.
The legal costs were more than $10,000.
Most families can’t afford to fight like that.
Right now, only families with money can fix a government mistake.
We were able to help save Hachi.
We were successful in saving Jack.
And now we’re working to save Lucy.
This is why we need Hachi’s Law, so families don’t have to go through this again.
Funds raised will go toward:
travel to Austin to meet with lawmakers
legal and policy work to draft the legislation
advocacy to build support across Texas
Once we fix this in Texas, the goal is to take this effort further and bring these same protections to other states.
This isn’t just about one dog. It’s happening more than people realize.
